12.0 Design and Management
of Learning Environments
Students must demonstrate
understanding of how to create learning environments that complement the
use of technology in teaching.
12.1 Develop performance tasks that require
students to:
(a) locate and analyze information as well
as draw conclusions and
(b) use a variety of available and appropriate
media to communicate results clearly
Recommended Portfolio Entries
(a) Utilize available and appropriate
resources (databases,
CD encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, spreadsheets,
Internet, videodiscs) for classroom instruction and/or staff development
The
two links above will take you to a set of sample database questions and
a set of sample spreadsheet questions. Students must know how to
filter the tables and arrange the columns in a database in order
to answer the first set of questions efficiently, and must know how to
manipulate the cells of a spreadsheet to get answers in the second set
of questions efficiently.
(b) Develop appropriate activities illustrating
student and/or teacher instructional demonstration
or utilization of available technologies such as: videodiscs, VCR,
computer generated graphs, multimedia programs/presentations.
The
link above will take you to a slide show presentation I put together to
introduce a unit on Geometry. The slide show is only a copy and therefore
does not have the capabilities of Power Point, so please use the "Previous"
and "Next" buttons to navigate.
12.2 Use computers and other technologies as
available to effectively and appropriately collect information about student
learning.
Recommended Portfolio Entries
Use data collection technology such as:
-
Instructional management systems
-
Instructional management assessments
-
Electronic
gradebooks
-
Student video projects and productions
-
Technology benchmark test development
-
Student management systems
The link
above will take you to a web page that sales electronic gradebook software
and other educational software. But homemade electronic gradebooks
are free and quite easy to make. Anyone who has or has access to
Microsoft Excel can make his or her own electronic gradebook. Excel
will do all the work for you; you can develop a gradebook that will average
your grades automatically and give added weight to any grades you specify.
Some schools also have their own electronic gradebook programs.
12.3 Use computers and other technologies as
available effectively and appropriately to communicate information in a
variety of formats on student learning to colleagues, parents, and others.
Recommended Portfolio Entries
-
Produce materials such as desktop publishing products
(brochures, newsletters, flyers, school newspaper),
mail merge form letters, electronically generated letters, or electronic
progress reports
-
Design graphs/presentations of student progress
-
Facilitate student presentations using available
multimedia presentations to colleagues, civic/community/parental organizations
-
Conduct instructional classes for parents utilizing
available and appropriate technology resources
-
Deliver educational conference presentations
-
Develop web pages to share information
-
Use e-mail
At the
beginning of each school year, I plan on making sure that all of the parents
of the students I will be teaching will have a copy of an e-mail address
where I can be reached.
I
would also like to build a class/team web page that any parent can come
to at any time to see the types of things we are presently studying.
I think it would be a good idea to also include in this page upcoming events,
special announcements, reminders, and student editorials. This is
a project that I feel the student will need to be a big part of.
12.4 Create physical settings that support
active student involvement, inquiry, and collaboration.
Recommended Portfolio Entries
-
Provide input on the planning of technology
classroom utilization for new facilities and on re-modeling, and renovations
of existing facilities as appropriate
-
Establish classroom/areas with the physical atmosphere
reflecting technology utilization
-
Display student (individual and collaborative)
technology projects as appropriate
The link
above will take you to a picture I have created of a technology facilitating
classroom.
12.5 Employ technology (where available and
appropriate) to organizational and management strategies that support active
student involvement, inquiry, and collaboration.
Recommended Portfolio Entries
This link
will take you to the unit plan I created in the fall of 1999. It
has several different websites, newsgroups, and listservs for the students
to employ during the weather unit. They will mainly be using The
Weather Channel's Homepage to aid in their predictions and confirmations
of findings.
-
Chart academic progress of student growth utilizing
technology (electronic spreadsheet, database, or web site)
-
Document and prepare an organized collection of
student projects/learning experiences applying appropriate technology and
accommodating various learning styles
12.6 Utilize available resources including
satellite, cable, wireless, and ITFS (Instructional Television Fixed Service)
to develop and deliver curriculum.
Recommended Portfolio Entries
-
Participate in satellite transmitted staff development
activity as available
-
Facilitate student learning utilizing available
and appropriate satellite/cable,
educational television, or ITFS broadcast
-
Utilize wireless technology in classroom presentations
(remote controls for videodisc and VCRs), wireless networking in computer
labs as available
The
above link will take you to the homepage of ChannelOne news, a children's
news channel broadcast in many classrooms. It is presented by students
for students.
Expanded Knowledge and Skills
12.7 Select and create learning experiences
that are appropriate for curriculum goals, relevant to learners, based
upon principles of effective teaching and learning, incorporate the use
of media and technology for teaching where appropriate and available, and
support learner expression in a variety of media using a variety of media
communication tools.
Recommended Portfolio Entries
-
Prepare and use integrated instructional units
for the teaching of computer skills within specific subject areas as appropriate
-
Facilitate subject area student
projects that use available media and technology through the creation
and/or presentation/publication stage
This website
from Nova is a complete project suitable for middle grade students.
It contains an online activity sheet for students to complete in
cooperative learning groups or individually after viewing a video on global
warming. Great activity!!
