13.0 Child Development,
Learning, and Diversity
Students must understand
and utilize concepts designed to accommodate learning styles and child
development/diversity for their content area and grade level.
13.1 Demonstrate the appropriate use of various
software and self-directed software programs to meet individual learning
styles and needs.
Recommended Portfolio Entries:
-
Use software and other appropriate
technology devices to assess different learning styles
-
Use software and other appropriate
technology devices such as diagnostic tools to ensure student performance
-
Enhance the understanding of curriculum and student
learning through utilization of appropriate and available technology in
the classroom
The
above links will take you to a couple of different places. The first
one takes you to a great site that will tell you just about anything you
want to know about different learning styles and how they can be implemented
into the curriculum. The second site is an introduction to some software
that will actually diagnose an individual's specific learning styles.
13.2 List/Use media and technology to support
learning for children with special needs.
Recommended Portfolio Entries:
-
Demonstrate knowledge in using appropriate adaptive
technologies such as: text-to-speech,
sip and puff, head
wand, tactical devices, special keyboards, braille
printers, touch screens, closed
caption, synthesizers, digitizers, large or modified screens
-
Use appropriate technologies for understanding
of knowledge and skill reinforcement
The above
links go to different informational sites on different adaptive technologies.
I have had some experience with text-to-speech while I was working in a
group home setting. One of our non-verbal residents had something
called a touch-talker. It was a commutacation device with many different
programmable buttons. There was a button that asked for a drink,
asked to use the phone, requested a snack - just about anything you could
think of could be put on this device. It was so helpful, and cut
down on her frustration immensely. I have also had some experience
with touch screens, closed captioning, and have seen but never used a head
wand.
13.3 List/Use media and technology as available
to support learning for children whose primary language is not English.
Recommended Portfolio Entry:
-
Demonstrate appropriate knowledge in the use of
bi-lingual software, literature,
and other appropriate technologies such as: video conferencing, CD-ROMs,
Internet, videodisc, videotapes, software, and electronic translators
13.4 List/Use appropriate local, state, and
national services or resources to meet diverse learning needs through technology.
Recommended Portfolio Entry:
-
Coordinate learning projects or activities that
utilize or demonstrate the appropriate use of technology such as: Teacher
Academy, Adaptive Technology Centers,
county health department, utility company, ERIC,
NC Wildlife Resources Commission, NC Extension Service
The AskERIC
link above is one of my favorites. There are ideas for almost any
subject you can imagine listed here. I have used many of them, specifically
during my Block experiences and in various portfolios I have put together
for future use.
