14.0 Social, Legal, and
Ethical Issues
Students must realize and
plan for issues involving social, legal, and ethical issues in technology.
This includes development of a classroom Acceptable Users Policy (AUP)
and teaching students about copyright laws and regulations.
14.1 Establish classroom policies and procedures
that ensure compliance with copyright
law, fair-use guidelines, security and child protection.
The
above link will take you to the guidelines for copyright in an electronic
environment from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's
website.
Recommended Portfolio Entries
-
Demonstrate knowledge of the LEA Copyright Policy
or Acceptable
Use Policy
-
Develop procedures and policies for a collaborative
classroom project
-
Develop web page development policies or guidelines
for child protection (electronic publishing of names, addresses and photographs)
The above
link will take you to "Haywood County Shools Networking and Telecommunications
Acceptable Use Policy".
14.2 Ensure equal access to media and technology
resources for all students
Recommended Portfolio Entries
-
Demonstrate a student sign-up
sheet
-
Monitor student use via a log or other type of
documentation device
The above
link is a sign-up sheet I created on Microsoft Excel that could be included
in a classroom that had limited computer use. It seems that although
most classrooms are getting their own computers, this generally means only
one computer per classroom. A sign-up sheet would help ensure that
each student would get equal access to that computer.
14.3 Social, legal, and ethical issues related
to technology use (Demonstrate knowledge and integration of network security
and Acceptable Use Policy into teaching).
Recommended Portfolio Entries
-
Utilize the NC Computer Skills Curriculum when
developing a lesson on ethical use of technology - Ethical Issues Lesson
Plans
-
Plan classroom role play situations that involve
illegal copying of software with a discussion to follow
-
List examples of ethical
and unethical issues; use videos such as "Don't Copy that Floppy" and
its lesson plans
This is
a great site from the online W200 Hyper Textbook. It's main heading
is on ethics in technology, and it covers privacy issues, copyright issues,
and equity issues. It is a very helpful page.
